Black Screen with File Manager Window at Startup

Here's the deal: when I'm starting up my computer and log in, the only thing that comes up is a black screen and a single window showing my documents. It would appear that Windows executes the "explorer" command, but rather than opening the shell, it opens a file manager. I can get past this by opening task manager and killing "explorer", then selecting "New Task..." and typing "explorer". Once I do this, everything boots up normally. How do I fix this? It happens every time I restart my computer or log in. I hope I have made my situation clear. Thank you so much for any help you can provide. Also, I checked regedit under HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Winlogon, and the string value for the Shell key is "Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\winlogon.exe" I don't know if that's how its supposed to be, but that was the only place I could think to check.
