I searched more and stumbled on what I needed. Turns out I hadn't quite finished setting up the virtual interface. http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/10724_3714521_2

I still think my assumption about Vista being at fault was reasonable since the old and erroneous DHCP entry survived a reboot. But for a first I can't blame Vista for my problem, it was me!
