My new HP laptop has this issue. I uninstalled NIS 2008, and that seemed to reduce the number of occurances, but it did not eliminate the lock ups completely. Some of the other forums also hinted at an HD issue with Western Digital, so I checked my specs, and sure enough, I had a WD HD. I contacted HP suport and spoke to an Indian gentleman named Nelson Montana. They instructed me to run a diagnostic on the HD, and it came back saying that I should replace the HD. Luckily, my machine is still under warranty, and they are sending me another HD. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
