The easiest way is to use partition cloning software such as that by Acronis. I would get hold of another laptop hard drive and an external USB caddy (sometimes you can buy the drive already in the caddy). Clone your laptop drive partitions to the external - then if the drive fails, simply swap the one in your laptop for the one in the caddy, and it will work. Then you can place the non-working one in the caddy and erase the partitions ready to accept a clone of your newly installed drive.
