A Firewall has many ports (like doors in the wall), and Can let things like update through one port (ASSIGNED to it) and not other programs that use other ports. Also a slim chance that your spybot and AV could be doing it so, as you stated, go into ms config and stop them from starting. Then if you get running turn one thing on at a time. Also check any software that might control what ever type of internet connection you have, be that modem or WiFi. You might have had an update there and now have a conflict. Can you copy and paste a list of your startup programs found in msconfig for me?
