In the end I'd decided I'd spent enough hours on it so as it was 'up' I stored off what I needed & reinstalled all successfully. I can only guess it was some weird/nasty thing that got in or some setting change etc that the kids might have inadvertantly done but I also checked services under admin & couldn't see anything.
