Does standalone-SP1 installer need all previous updates installed?

Can anyone advise me about updating Vista basic to SP1?
My new laptop came with Vista (NOT SP1) preinstalled. However, it transpired that
the hard-disk was defective, so the manufacturers supplied a new HDD together with
a Vista install DVD (still not SP1). The new HDD is fine; I've installed Vista (+
3rd party hardware drivers etc.) and all is well. Except... I now have almost 200
MBytes of Windows Updates waiting to be downloaded. Vista SP1 is not listed amongst
these updates.
So my question is:
Can I forget these updates and download the standalone SP1 installer from Windows
Updates instead?
Or does SP1 need the previous updates to install satisfactorily?
It's not just that I want to save myself a possibly redundant 200 MByte download,
but I would like to begin again with as clean an SP1 installation as possible.
Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can provide.
