This could either be hardware or software related, but in any case I would back up your data at this point. It doesn't sound like malware to me, but to make sure you could post at SpywareBeware. You have to register, but its free. Be sure to read the "pinned" posts at the top before doing anything with HijackThis. Is there anything relevant in your system event log ? In Device Manager are there any yellow exclamation marks beside items ? You have clearly been contemplating a reinstall of Vista. If you go down this course (remembering that you will lose all your data and any programs you have added since the PC was new) you should be able to use the in-built Dell PC Restore function if you don't have a Vista DVD. Your Dell manual is downloadable here. You will find the instructions you need on page 147.
