System Restore Suddenly Not Working

Last night I installed software for the Canon 8600 scanner (had installed updated driver). In any case it went fine, but now I find my internet connection as slow as dial up (I have cable and it's been fast). I decided to use system restore this morning, but it will not complete. I have tried five different restore points but nada. I first see "System Restore is repairing the registry" and then "System Restore is complete" The PC restarts and the sign on screen appears. Then, after signing on, I get the following message: System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer files & settings were not changed. Details: An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. I am concerned about losing this feature. Hoping someone out there has a solution...please.
