Pointer blinks in Office file menus

When I open the file menus via the Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.) the pointer arrow rapidly blinks in alternatating sequence with the hourglass icon. It's very hard to read and focus on navigating the menus with this going on. I use the Documents in the start menu now to open docs b/c the pointer in there doesn't blink, but to "save as" I still have to go through the program menu. Can I make this STOP?? I don't normally get migraines, but this blinking makes me think I could develop them. I guess a Windows-caused seizure condition might be a way to access a bit of Gates' fortune, but I'd rather just peacefully access my files. Anyone out there know how to make this stop?
