Possible explanation is that your network adapter is turned off by Vista to conserve
battery power. Ypu may deactivate by folowing these steps
Goto Device manager
Select the network adapters...one at a time
Double clicking on it will bring up the properties box
Select Power Management
Uncheck 'Allow Computer to Turn Off This Device to Save Power'....for both adapters...Ethernet
and Wireless
Restart
