I would ask around for people that use them. Some are junk and some are great. The
manufacturers after a time quit updating their products. Things like the motherboard,
chip set, your basic IDE channels & etc. Many times these items are never updated
from the very first driver that is installed. Some places make it very difficult
for ordinary people to find updates or how to apply the update. A good example is
INTEL. 35% to 45% of motherboards have Intel chip sets yet how many people check
for Intel updates. I have resolved many problems by fixing these. Your manufacturers
WILL let you down! They have neither the time nor manpower to keep up with these
for more than a month or two at best. It just isn't economical for them. Your major
players like Dell and Gateway have even more limited options for these. You will
not only get a crippled BIOS with your BRANDED machine, but you will seldom if ever
see an system driver update. I don't make money advertising for these companies so
I won't name the one I use, but I find that I get offered a critical update that
resolves a know (published) problem about once every 4 to 6 months. Like anything
else you buy, Study STudy, STUDy and STUDY again, before making a purchase.

Also you would find that many of the drivers if you were able to find the updates
they suggest and manually try to install them would not only take weeks to accomplish,
but many do not work properly if not done in a group installation.

Again I would only ask how many times have you checked for updates yourself manually
for your chip set? 99% of the people would say never and the rest would only check
the manufacturer site. Also look at if you have the JMICRON drivers four you AHCI
and RAID. Did yo now that these are only meant as temporary drivers, to be updated
by the real Intel (or other brand) drivers in manufacturer updates that never get
issued.
