Can't play dvds using Media Player

Sorry - I made a previous post about coloured pixels but realised that the description I made was terrible. Something's happened today which means that dvds will no longer play on my pc using Windows Media Player. They will work on Cyberlink's Power DVD and on VLC Media player which I downloaded after following a tip on Annoyances. When I play then on Media Player (and of course Media Center) I get the video frame full of coloured squares. I can make out some movement (eg a person or a car) but otherwise something that looks like a coloured mosaic, Media Player will still run mpegs; it's just purchased dvds I'm talking about. Driving me nuts. Can anyone help please? Very many thanks. Phil
