Many thanks for your kind response. I would like to report that my story had a happy
ending yesterday. For
some reason, I normally hesitate to use Driver Detective (for free). But, being
desperate, I decided to
give it a try and learned that my modem driver was fine.
It also verified two drivers being questionable. At that
point, I concluded that the problem must be the modem
card. So I opened the computer (for the first time) to examine it and found that
it was not firmly seated at one end. Subsequently I was able to connect to my two
dial-up Internet service providers after re-seating the modem card. I think I may
purchase a copy of Driver Detective as a valuable troubleshooting aid and driver-
downloading tool. This was my first exposure to
Windows Vista and I have learned much about it in a couple of days.
