Hi, Rice46,
I did not imply that the card unseated itself. What I meant was that the card was
not seated all the way in
at the far end. It might have gotten loose by the frequent removal and insertion
of the RJ11 cable at the card's external connector. I have noticed that the connector
is not ridgidly fastened to the computer frame. It's my speculation that each time
the cable is pulled out, the far end of the card can get loose a bit accordingly
since the connector is part of the card. My initial thinking was that the CAUSE
WAS either SOFTWARE or HARDWARE. Without any clear diagnostic data to begin with,
I tend to assume it's a software matter as in my many years of using home computers
I find most their electronics seldom goes bad. In the past year I have solved two
computers' mysterious problems by re-installing the operating system. Also it is
less laborious. If the software proves to be OK, then I have gained some very useful
knowledge and am one step closer to the solution. Nothing is lost. In my case,
it was Drive Detective's findings that the modem driver was OK that led me to open
the computer to look around. I knew that I might not be able to solve a hardware
problem easily. But, at least it was worth a try and I had nothing to lose. This
is what we technically call troubleshooting by elimination
of likely problem causes.
As a matter of fact, I am highly impressed with the quality of the HP computer's
hardware except for this minor flaw. Once again, thank you for your thoughtful
comments.
