First you need to make sure you have the LLTD responder on HP machine, see link here;

Next you have to change the the workgroup name on the XP machine from MS Home to
vista's workgroup name, which is workgroup. Then turn on what folders you want to
share on the xp machine, other than the default public folder. Then on the vista
machine go into the network and sharing center and turn on network discovery, file
sharing, public folder sharing, printer sharing and most important password protected
sharing if you want to block unauthorized access to pc. This just means that when
you want to connect to a machine on your network you have to know their login password
to gain access. Then reboot both pc's and then check to see if you can see the xp
machine through the network sharing center on the vista machine. The only main concern
is firewall issues and some antivirus software might block the connections.
