IE 8 does not do this on it's own. It sounds like possibly an existing (hidden)malware 
attacked when you updated. I would look into that. 
Just in case you don't not know (I'm sure you do), you can NORMALLY choose any page 
as you opening/home page, via Tools/Internet options/Use Current. And you can choose 
a blank page before you do the "use current" selection.
