Anyway I'm afriad daignosis is going to be tedious in any event as you have one of MS's more generic error message. On a straight statistical basis this is going to be a hardware error, so I'd also post on a hardware forum. On the software side it makes sense to uninstall your new arrivals (I happen to think it makes sense to uninstall IE8 anyway, as the world isn't quite ready for it - or vice versa - but that's another story). Some other simple diagnostic steps you might try: 1. What does the Event Viewer log say ? It will often reveal valuable information. 2. Does this happen in Safe Mode ? 3. Try disconnecting from all networks and running without your virus-checker.
