Perhaps a little more information. The application is an accounting system, the
executable and databases reside on a Windows 2008 server and the maker of the accounting
system, AccountMate, does not sign the code. This is one of the largest accounting
systems for SMB's out there not owned by MS. The VAR that's installing is the largest
reseller in America of AccountMate.
My major issue, however, is that there is no significant granularity in the ability
to control the security requirement for Vista/Win7. I can't say, for example, this
software running from this IP is OK, don't ask me about it any more and leave the
rest of the security system in place. My only option (apparently) is to try to get
the maker of the software to sign the code.
This same is true of IE8 (one of the reasons I don't use it). I can't add one-off
exceptions. I run my own servers (Linux of course) using Webmin to administer them
via https. IE complains about the self generated cert every time. I don't want
to have to worry about managing certificates, I just want to issue an exception.
Firefox does that very nicely.
The inability to make exceptions is certainly an Annoyance.
