The best way is to search (e.g. Google or Yahoo) for the names of the startup programs 
to find descriptions of what they do, and whether or not they're necessary.

An easy way to do this is to download and install Codestuff's free Starter app. Run it and click the Startups tab to see a list 
of your auto-running apps; you can then right-click any of them to see some convenient 
search options for that app.
