May I ask some additional information. It looks like you are trying to download what 
is know as the 'Stand Alone' update and not use automatic updating.  This means you 
are manually downloading from one of the KBxxxxxx pages or a collective page and 
manually installing it at your convenience.  Is that correct?

Vista started using a service in it called BITS that prevents this problem but it 
only works 'From the normal Update process'. If you are using the normal update process 
and still having problems I am including a link to a page that helps you troubleshoot 
the BITS Service.

So a quick recap: 
1. You might be manually D/Ling and have a bad connection.

or

2. You are using the regular Update system and the BITS Service is not working correctly. 

These are going to be the most common problems.
