Restoring Windows Vista on former Linux box

I am looking for a solution simple enough for my simple mind. As succinctly as I
can, I obtained an HP Pavilion a1740n with Linux Ubuntu installed. I ordered restore
disks from HP for the Vista Home Premium which it originally shipped with and tried
that, but the machine will have none of it. It started "Windows loading files" then
to the Microsoft loading bar, then a flash of what I assume is a blue Vista splash
screen (or a hint of the BSOD), then black. I've since learned Linux was installed
on the entire drive, overwriting the Windows MBR. I'm wondering if I restore the
MBR if it will read the restore disks, but I'm not an expert and am seeking a solution
which even I can understand. I downloaded a Windows Vista Recovery Disk from neosmart.net,
but got roadblocked by a "Windows cannot open required file D:\sources install.wim".
I'm at a loss right now on how to restore the machine. Here's hoping the bright minds
on Annoyances.org can provide a solution even I can understand.
