If you are worried about whether the cleaner will damage your system, use a free-for-private
use product like Advanced SystemCare. These people make their money by selling for
corporate use; if their product damages systems, they get sued.
If you use a freeware product, choose one which has a proven track record, is used
and recommended by thousands, and is regularly included on magazine cover discs,
such as CCleaner. However, bear in mind that a freeware product will generally be
less effective than free-for-private-use, because it won't have had the same R&D
effort behind it.
Registry cleaning is important to the effficiency of your system. A state-of-the-art
cleaner will recognise and remove three kinds of undesirable entries:
(1) Pathological entries - these are clandestine entries made by malicious software
which has installed itself on your system. If this is your case, the consequences
of NOT using a registry cleaner can be serious.
(2) Dysfunctional entries - a very numerous class; for example, entries relating
to software which has actually been uninstalled. One entry of this kind can add
a full minute to your boot time, while the search protocol is timing out.
(3) Non-significant entries - eg which might relate to a music CD which you played
last month, and will never play again. These don't do any harm, but why do you need
to keep them?
If you want to do a thorough job, you will need to run two or three different cleaners
each time, because they all search according to slightly different rules.
