Good point about OneCare, Charlie, namely that if anyone understands their own system,
MS should.
I've tried Auslogics and I like their stuff, but ironically, their registry cleaner
is the only one I have had a problem with! After a decade of trying all sorts of
different ones, from Registry Mechanic 98 on.
Not that it was a question of "trashing the system" - just one or two applications
started or ran a bit awkwardly afterwards. Mainly freeware unkowns, nothing major.
The warning signs were clear enough because the Auslogics registry cleaner (running
under Vista) found several hundred entries to delete, where others found only a few
dozen. However, I have a machine which I keep essentially for the purpose of experiment,
so ran it anyway to see what would happen.
From this I learned another advantage of running several different cleaners - if
one of them finds a huge amount more than the others, don't run it.
And of course, as JM points out in his first post, the intelligent user always backs
up first.
