I accept your point, JM, that other types of programs can also delete these entries.
The issue, as I see it, is one of obtaining the widest possible protection.
We all know it's a bad idea to run two defensive programs of the same type in TSR
mode - eg two anti-virus programs, or two firewalls; because there is a risk that
they will conflict and struggle for control of the machine. But we also know that
no one application, by itself, provides 100% protection against every conceivable
risk. Some do one thing better, some do another thing better.
So for comprehensive protection, it's best to run ONE good antivirus program, ONE
good firewall, ONE good registry cleaner, ONE good adware program, etc.
Some intruders will always get past some of your defensive walls. Your registry
cleaner may not stop them either, but at least it's an extra line of defence.
