Though you can still see it the old fassioned way. Open the "Network and Sharing Center" and click on 'View Status'. Going to some site or software is not going to tell you anything more than what you as running at any one moment in time. View status will at least give you an update updated at frequent intervals. A lot of people use wireless now and from there you can also watch the bars of the wireless as an indicator of the connection quality.
