System Problem

I tried to boot up my computer this morning (HP), and it does nothing. I am running Windows Vista and the lights go on, but the hard drive doesn't appear to be functioning (the blue light for the hard drive isn't flashing and I don't hear clicking). Last time I used it, it downloaded some Windows updates (the 1of 3, 2 of 3, etc), but I don't know which they were since it did so automatically. Maybe my hard drive fried!! Any suggestions on how I can boot up my system to check it out? Your advice is greatly appreciated!
