If you have a cable connection in place, that will take priority over wireless. Is the "hard" wireless switch enabled (not sure where it is on a Compaq, or what key combination) ? Is the Wireless Zero Configuration service started ? Double-click on the wireless icon in your system tray . . . Properties . . .
