Connectivity Issues

This is a strange one. A customer gave me her Sony Vaio laptop, model VGN-CR4000.
She said she had connectivity issues. She uses AOL, the AOL program 9.0. She gets
her e-mail ok but has trouble receiving SOME web sites. As a workaround, she opened
IE8. IE8 will not access anything at all (IE cannot display this webpage). I tried
all obvious settings and could not get IE8 to work. Also, other programs have connectivity
issues. She could not update Webroot Spysweeper, Trend Micro's PC-Cillin, Spybot,
Malwarebytes, etc. No connectivity from any of these programs, but AOL Mail works
fine and AOL does access many websites, but not all.
I tried everything and have made no progress. I uninstalled Vista SP2 and IE8. No
change. I reinstalled IE8 nothing. She had Safari and Chrome installed. These could
not access any web site.
I installed Firefox, and it works like a champ with no issues whatsoever. So now
my client has a workaround, AOL complemented by Firefox. I am concerned, however,
about her security suite not being able to get updates, and don't want to suggest
manual updates for her.
I did not reinstall SP2 and am sitting with SP1 and IE8.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Tom
