I don't know what is wrong but I had this exact problem yesterday. I'm wondering if it's related to my problem that I just posted about. I did a CCleaner cleaning, a disk cleanup, and defragged my drive and it started the updates working again. I can't really believe that the fix was that easy, or that was the problem. I'm leaning toward another glitch caused by another update, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know for sure.
