Unknown freezing issue

I just recently purchased a new 1.5TB hard drive and 4GB of extra memory for my computer.
I opened up my computer and tossed them in, but when I started the computer up again
and attempted to format the hard drive, it froze. I forced a restart not thinking
anything of it and went about my business, but it continues to happen. It'll freeze
when I'm browsing the internet, or when I've left nothing running but the attempted
format of the hard drive. Everything just locks up and stays that way until I restart
it.
I've tried the computer without the memory and hard drive in and the problem remains.
I just took my entire computer apart and put it back together to check all the connections,
but upon turning it on it froze after about 20 minutes, just browsing the internet.
I ran a malware and anti-virus scan in safe mode, but nothing turned up. It has yet
to freeze in safe mode as well.
Any ideas what's causing the problem? When I first turned on the computer to format
the drive, I chose to format it as MBR rather than GPT. Could this cause an issue?
