Dual Booting

So I installed vista on a separate partition and everything worked just fine. I made my boot.ini so as XP is my default OS. However, there's a minor annoyance. When I restart my comp, the boot loader gives me two options: Legacy (pre longhorn windows version) or Longhorn. Selecting Longhorn obviously boots vista, but selecting Legacy brings me to another screen with another two choices:XP or Longhorn. XP boots just fine if I choose it, and choosing Longhorn again also boots vista. What is the point of this redundancy and is there anyway to eliminate it?

Take a look at the boot.ini file, maybe you could post it here so we can all take a look. OK, so how did you get your copy of Vista? I even signed up for the Beta test program. (Feel like bombing Seattle.) :)

I got my copy of vista through a friend who has connections ;). Here's my boot.ini file: [boot loader] timeout=10 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /FASTDETECT multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Longhorn" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT /USENEWLOADER

Check to see if the (usually hidden) NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files are on the C: drive - and - the D: drive. Compare the sizes/versions of the ntldr & ntdetect.com files. I suspect that you need to make a copy of the ntldr on the C: drive and keep it safe, then replace it with the new ntldr from the Longhorn installation, given the /USENEWLOADER parameter. Just a hunch really, Don't alter the boot.ini file as yet.

(Envy!) ;-)

In order to get rid of the extra screen you need to edit the boot.ini file to use the /usenewloader at the end of the xp line. Then there are 2 files wininit and winload that have to be copied from vista's system32 folder to the same in xp. That should allow you to still dual boot and be able to get rid of that screen appearing twice. Also as a note to MAC you can always get a copy of Vista by getting a MSDN subscription and just downloading it, or knowing a freind with connections i suppose.

XP INFO

Just as soon as the government hands over the $12.5 million they have owed me for the last five years. And I don't expect to have to kiss anyone's butt to get it either.
