Transferring Program Files to Vista

I have winxp(Home) and want to transfer some 60 programs in my program files folder
to Vista. The program MS offers seems to be ok for some files but not program files.
Am I supposed to have installation programs for all of these. Yikes, its enough
to make one stay with winxp. Am I missing something? -Brock

Yep, you're supposed to reinstall them all.
There are three reasons for that:
1) Many programs drop stuff in your \windows(\system32) folder in addition to the
programs folder
2) Most programs put entries in your registry
3) Many programs that work OK on XP won't work on Vista so you'll need to update/change/dump
them.

MS purchased the company that sold application moving program "Aloha Bob PC Relocator"
and has plans to offer an updated version of it as a renamed MS utility. This utility
will be available for download sometime around the official launch date of Vista,
and will be available as a Windows Genuine Advantage "perk."
The idea is to allow XP users to move their programs as well as their data. The
File and Settings Transfer wizard in XP only moves files and settings, and is a bit
clumsy. The new utility is expected to be much more capable.
But as 666 posted, not every app will make the move to Vista willingly. I'm sure
some will have to be reinstalled the old fashioned way.

This could be huge to MS. I hope they realize it is becoming an ever increasing
problem as people find more and more to do with their computers and the program file
builds up. I know I have no eagerness to stand in line for Vista given the arduous
task of rebuilding my program file. Good news, Dan. I will definetely wait for
this one. - Brock P.S. I agree the program they offer for transferring is pretty
lame.
