hi everyone. i installed vista rc1 about a month ago, and in the last two weeks,
both of the shift keys on my dell inspiron 6000, a laptop, have simply stopped working.
i now have to resort to the caps lock and character map for any uppercase/punctuation.
is there any fix for this?

i've tried reinstalling the driver several times without success. i guess i should
also note that i've updated the chipset driver as well, and i haven't spilled anything
on the keyboard.

If the shift key was working in Vista, then just stopped I would guess you have a
problem with the Keyboard, but just a guess really. I remapped my Caps Lock Key on
XP Computer to a Shift Key. I just don't like the Caps Lock Key myself. If you do
have a bad keyboard you could give it a try. May hold you over for a while. I used
registry edit to do it, and it was a bit difficult to do, and finding info about
how Vista handles it may prove harder. Some Keyboard remapping software that works
with XP, may work with Vista. Google should be able to help find such software. If
you do find the keyboard is broken, Dell
Laptop keyboards are also easy to find on the internet, and not to expensive either.

If you can start to MS DOS on a floppy or flash drive (if your lappy has the ability
to do one or the other or both), or some other offline OS (say BartPE), you can see
if shift is working in those OSs.
Or just start into the BIOS setup utility. IIRC Dell BIOSs use the shift keys for
working in the BIOS so see if they work there.
If keys work everywhere else but Vista, then Vista's the culprit. If they work nowhere,
time for a new keyboard as Steve pointed out.
