Vista RAM "sweet spot" is definitely 1GB

My Vista PC was running one module of 512MB RAM because at the time I built it, there
were no good deals on RAM and I was in no big hurry to play with Vista at the moment.
However, since RC2 was distributed I have been using the Vista PC more and more for
general computing. This week a local big box retailer had a good deal on PNY DDR2
PC667 Dual Channel RAM ($79.99 after rebate) so I picked up a pair and installed.
Quantitatively, the PC's Windows Experience Index went from 2.9 to 4.5, which is
a pretty nice jolt. IE almost pops open with four home pages and the Aero effect
is now active.

My Vista rating is only 1.4. RAM is the limiting factor. I have 1.5 GB but my system
is only a 1.3GHz Celeron and the front side bus is limited to 100 MHz. I can't overclock.
With an NVidia graphic card with 512 MB on board, and other upgrades, everything
else runs better than 4. But not the RAM. I am not very happy with Vista and plan
to continue running XP, which flies with all the upgrades. I have a dual-boot system.

Maybe it's a case not so much of not enough, as 1-1/2 GB is plenty--rather, it's
a case of just too darn slow.
Naturally, PC100 doesn't have the throughput of newer types such as PC2700 or PC4200,
for example.

That is what I see as the problem with Vista: you will have to spend bucks either
buying a new machine or upgrading your existing one. Any CPU running at less than
2GHz is marginal for Vista, so it doesn't make sense to install a super graphics
board, for example, or more RAM. Mine, for example, runs at 1.3 GHz (13 times front
side bus). The RAM will run at 133 MHz but the system cannot be overclocked so it
runs at only 100MHz. Thus the Vista 1.4 rating. When Vista RC2 dies I don't plan
to replace it but will live very happily with XP for some time to come. I am not
impressed by the so-called "eye candy." Eye candy that impresses me has measurments
like 36-18-36.

I would say to even have 1.5 to 2gb of RAM for Vista. Especially if you are a gamer.
With my system just idle my cpu usage is 40-50% and is using 400-500mb of ram. My
video card only has 128mb of memory 9600XT AIW) though. Not sure if that makes a
difference. My cpu is an AMD64 4000+
