Battle of the default browsers

Running Vista RC1. Want Firefox 2.0 to be the default browser. It says that it
is. However when I try to click a link in e-mail, for instance, IE 7 opens. Checking
its settings reveals that it, too, thinks it is the default browser. I need IE 7
for those sites that Firefox cannot handle (primarily video sites) so I can't just
get rid of it. How do I convince Firefox to reset itself and IE 7 to relinquish
its iron grip?
Thanks in advance!

I note that nobody has responded to your inquiry in several days. I don't use Vista
(and don't plan to for another year or so) so I personally can't help you with specifics.
However, I think you're more likely to get an answer if you post your question on
a forum specifically devoted to Firefox such as MozillaZine:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/
Hope that's of some help.

Mandy- under ordinary circumstances, I would quickly agree with you. But this problem
is only occurring in Vista, so I figured it might have something to do with the OS.

I agree that the problem may well have something to do with the OS. However, I can't
find anything on mozilla.com to indicate that Firefox 2.0 formally supports Vista,
and that might be source of the problem.
Also, you will probably find it hard to get help if you are still using RC1, when
RC2 has supplanted it and the "official" versions of Vista are already on sale (business
editions) or due to be available in January (personal editions). If it actually
is an OS problem, quite possibly it has been fixed in a later release -- and that
might mean that the only way to fix it is to pay for a fully-released copy of Vista.
Otoh, on the Mozillazine forums, you may find some Firefox experts who would be familiar
with the problem and could offer a workaround that would let you continue to use
RC1 for free, if that's what you want to do.

Mandy- as a consultant, I have no choice but to be running Vista on some machine,
in order to prepare for the onslaught of questions I will be getting once my clients
start buying machines with Vista pre-installed. I have tried everywhere to get RC2
(which I thought I would be getting automatically as a registered beta tester) but
I seem stuck with RC1. I will, of course, be buying a version of the commercial
Vista, once it is out. It is my obligation to my clients to do so. But this was
an interesting problem, and since my objective is to figure them out/get answers
here before they crop up in my clients' real life, I thought it would do no harm
to ask. The problem with asking at a mozilla forum, is that the folks there don't
necessarily run both browsers as regularly as I do. And TRY asking a mozilla quesyion
at an IE forum :) Nevertheless, I appreciate your input here. Any idea where I can
get a copy of RC2?

It must be particularly difficult with all the different flavors of Vista being offered.
From what I've read, the variations are much more pronounced than the difference
between WinXP-Pro and WinXP-Home when they were first introduced.

I sympathize [g]. On many technical questions, half the battle seems to be figuring
out where to post the question. (I've been trying to get more information the specs
for GIF image files, because Google's Picasa -- and a number of other image-editing
programs -- won't read a couple of old GIF files that I've downloaded from the web
-- although Firefox, WordPerfect etc. read 'em just fine. After a lot of experimentation,
I figured out myself that reading the files into MS Paint and saving them again (with
no editing changes), would fix whatever was non-standard about the files. I still
haven't been able to find out exactly what the problem was, and I can't find a forum
with graphics experts that might be able to explain further.)
However, everybody has to keep IE if only to be able to download Windows updates,
so if you haven't posted at MozillaZine, you might still give it a try.
David wrote: "Any idea where I can get a copy of RC2?"
I doubt if you could get one that would work properly at this late date. Microsoft
has already "turned off" the beta test program. Assuming you could find some other
beta tester whom you trust who was willing to give you a copy of whatever (s)he downloaded,
there's seems to be a pretty high probability that it wouldn't pass all Microsoft's
activation and verification checks when you tried to install it.
Since you'll need the real thing for customer support anyway, I assume your only
choice is to wait till January and buy it. Otoh, it you posted a query on this Forum
with the title: "Is RC2 still available for download anywhere?", perhaps somebody
else might have a better suggestion.
Good luck!

For what it's worth, I have exactly the same problem and I am running RC2. Firefox
always asks if I want to make it the default browser. I always set it so but it never
sticks. IE7 just will not get out of the way. I have no problem running Firefox as
default under XP.
