Vince, I've been using a couple different external USB harddrives (different brand cases, too), with no problem in Vista. The needed driver is recognized almost immediately once the USB connection is made. It may be that your external harddrive case has a peculiar proprietary chipset or the actuall harddrive in the case is not fully connected to the case. --Ray B

Hi I found a solution to this problem, I think the problem is that windows isnt checking
the generic drivers that are installed with Vista.

Here is the solution:

1. Connect your drive
2. When prompted that windows needs a driver click "locate and install driver software"
3. Once you are prompted for the disc click "I dont have the disc. Show me other
options."
4. Now click on "Browse my computer for driver software"
5. In the box type in the location of your system32 directory.. (in mine and most
cases it will be "C:\Windows\System32" ) MAKE SURE the Include subfolders box is
ticked and click next.
6. Windows will find the driver and install it..
7. Windows may ask you for the disc a few more times, just follow steps 3 to 5 again
and the drivers will install perfectly.

This is probably just one of the may bug in vista.. I am happy I found a solution
for it though and I'm sure you will be too.
enjoy!!

Gentlemen,
I have encountered the same problem with Vista looking for a USB to IDE driver. However;
when I tried your solution, I get the following message:
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.

Windows found driver sftware for your device but encountered an error while attempting
to install it.

USB mass storage device

The system cannot find the specified file.

If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check
the support section for driver software.

I was able to do this for one of my external drives, but there are no specific drivers
for the other external drive or for the flash drives that I am also having the problem
with. Some of my flash drives picked up with no problems whatsoever, while the others
keep coming up with the same error above when I tell it to search in the system32
folder. I do have the check subfolders box checked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

George

IEEE1394,
Thank you very much; I was missing the inf file. I replaced it and everything is
being recognized without a problem.
Thanks again,
George

Hi, I have the same issue using a safecom caddy - however I dont have the .inf file. I've searched the entire machine and it's just not there. I'm using Vista 64 Ultimate if that's any help. Can someone post a link where I could download the required files? Thanks in advance. Freudy

I believe I can help you. I have been having this problem for quite some time.
Vista was working fine in the beginning and then it stopped recognizing and installing
the new USB hardware. I still don't know why this happened or how to fix it, but
here is the work around. It worked for me, it should work for you.

For some reason or another, windows vista isn't searching in the right place for
it's own drivers. There is a limit to the depth of the tree search as well, that's
why searching the entire c:\ drive does not work.

Once windows fails to find the correct driver, click on the line for more options.
One option is to search the internet which still finds nothing since the correct
drivers come with Windows Vista. The one you want to pick is marked Advanced and
allows you to point to the folder where the drivers reside.

Click it and point to this folder for every USB device and missing driver you have.
I literally did this 15 times to load all of the hardware that wouldn't load prior
to this fix. Now everything works great... EVERYTHING.

So, here is the place to point.
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\

Check the box which says to check the subdirectories and click search, or enter,
or go, or whatever the select box says.

That should do the trick, all of the windows drivers are in there. You will probably
have to do this quite a few times to catch up to all of the hardware you've been
trying to install.

My follow up question is, how to I remind Vista to search there on it's own rather
than me having to show it every time I attach a new device?

I had the same problem with vista. You need to look or point to the system32 folder to find the driver.
