I've tried a number of different devices from flash drives to external hdd's. None of them work. Vista Keeps asking for drivers.. which i can't find anywhere. Anyone else encounter this problem?

Vince,

When I installed my flash drive (Vista Enterprise) Vista looked & installed drivers
automatically & likewise when I attached my 250gB Lacie USB2 external drive. So they
work fine, just waiting for Creative to get their act together for my Audigy 2ZS
but also other progs/apps I've tried don't install but some I have do so it's a waiting
game I think.

What make of chipset is giving you your USB connectivity? State make and model of
motherboard, or if USB is on an expansion card, state make and model of card.

the make of my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-K8N. I've already been to the Gigabyte Website looking for drivers. I tried installing both chipset and usb 2 drivers for xp as vista's aren't available on the website. No Luck. Any Suggestions? I'm running Vista RTM x86

There are 22 different motherboards with nine different nVidia chipsets made by Gigabyte
that have K8N in the model number.

My suggestion would be to find your exact model on this page at Gigabyte,
http://www.giga-byte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_List.aspx?VenderType=AMD&CPUType=socket+939,
then go to the nVidia website and download the Vista driver for that exact chipset.

Please image your installation or backup your data before doing this, however, as
there is no telling what is going to happen when you change chipset drivers.

If the OS is looking for drivers for a removable device it will certainly not be
the motherboard chipset USB drivers ? if it were then it would never know you had
plugged anything in ?, most likely something from the Vista DVD , whenever XP had
this sort of problem it was usually looking for usbstor.sys from the i386 folder
on the XP CD ?

Cheers HC

I had the exact same problem with RC2 - whenever I popped in a USB memory stick it
couldn'd find a driver, which was pretty annoying to say the least.

But in RC1 they worked fine.

I now have RTM and it works fine for me.

No idea why, as it has been the same hardware all along.

Maybe a long shot, but try enabling the local administrator account and log in with
that and pop it in - thats the only way I could get it to install the driver for
the Nokia USB cable.

I have similar problems with the GA-K8NXP-SLI- no mass storage (thumb drive, USB HD, Camera, flash memory) are recognized when using any of the (10) on-board USB ports. However, they do work through either of the add-in USB cards I have installed.

All other devices (printers, PDAs, webcams, etc) seem to work fine from the on-board ports- it is just MSD devices through the (nForce4?) on-board USB ports that are giving me grief.

I formatted Vista and went back to XP and all of the ports work fine. I did a new install (on a different HD that I put in a drive swap cage) and the problems are still there- it is definatly Vista specific.

Anyone heard any official solutions to this problem?

Thanks,
Bruce

I had the exact same problem with USB Devices (Mass Storage and Mice, maybe even
more USB stuff) with Windows Vista Ultimate and got an emergency solution for that:

- plug in
- hit locate and install driver
- if active Windows Update searches stupidly around
- don't have disc (but we have, hehe)
- browse computer
- type to Location: C:\Windows\System32 (I checked subfolders too)
- next
- repeat this for all following stuff (USB-Mass Storage Drivers, Disk Drive, Generic
Volume etc.)
- happy USBing

Yes, how could Microsoft know that the drivers could already exist in the System?

For Flash Drives/USB Discs you have to do this once per PC, for Mice once per USB-Connector
!?!

Anyone know if you can point to default driver search locations via registry or something?

I have tried the windows system 32 solution but I still cannot access files on my mass USB storage. In fact I would like to have it as a shortcut on my desktop. Do any of you know how to proceed? JB

@Jacques: Does it assign a Drive Letter? Check in Device Manager if you got any other
driver problems and tell, maybe i can help...

Now i got the 64-bit version of Vista Ultimate installed and the USB Driver Problem
didn't appear to me yet, but i found a way how it may be fixed permanently:
In Group Policy Editor (run: gpedit.msc) User Config -> Administrative Templates
-> System -> Driver Installation ----> Config Driver Search Locations!!! (what i
was searching for).

Can anybody who still has the USB problem plz tell me if it works, when u put that
C.\Windows\system32 folder in there?
Thx!

I've hit the same driver problem connecting a USB pen and traced it to a base Vista problem... Very simple to fix then install drivers, patches, software etc.

Just turn off System Restore - which is doing clever things with versions of files so they can't be found!

Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> System Protection. Wait for it to load settings then untick C:\. Click to accept the change. Either unplug/replug your device, or in device manager right click it and opt to reinstall driver and you're done. Just got my devices installed once I found that.

I did this and it said it found the file but an error happened when it tried to install it. Thus I still can't use any of my USB storage devices. They worked at the beginning but I had Vista re-installed and now . . . zippola!

@Tim Tjosvold
have u tried removing any USB related devices (including controllers) from "Device
Manager" to let them be reinstalled on the next new devices checkup ("Scan for Hardware
changes"-button or reboot)?
Or maybe there are updated Drivers available for your USB Controller.
Sometimes those things get stuck and need a push, f.ex. when those HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
or \USBSTOR registry keys get scrambled.
Good Luck
