For most average folks, IMO the best way to get Vista is preinstalled on a new computer.
It's true that Vista's best features blossom only on quality hardware, so if you
are shopping in the midrange (say $750USD to about $1300 for a desktop) be sure to
wait the month or so for Vista.
If your budget allows a budget system, buy it between now and Vista's launch to take
advantage of the need for the retail channel to flush out XP-loaded inventory by
price-cutting. Many major manufacturers are supplying upgrade-to-Vista coupons you
redeem after the Jan. 30th launch, so that gives you the option to install Vista
at a later time if desired. If the budget system only offers an upgrade to Vista
Home Basic, chances are that the computer does not have the horsepower needed to
get the neat new graphics, putting aside the fact that Vista Home Basic does not
include the Aero graphics anyway. You have to have Vista Home Premium or better
to get the Aero graphics.

Hi Dan Sarandrea,
Thank you for your reply. I plan to buy a brand new upmarket PC. And in very simple
language please will you tell me if it would be a good idea to go for Vista and what
are the advantages over WinXP. And are there any unforseen problems I could run
into with Vista please? Thanks a lot as I really would appreciate the help.

If buying an upmarket PC, I would recommend waiting the month or so then buy one
with Vista preinstalled.
As to Vista's relative goodness compared to other options (XP, Mac, Linux etc), just
Google----there is absolutely no shortage of coverage and opinion on the topic.
And if I could tell you about unforeseen problems, they wouldn't be unforeseen, would
they? ;-)

I thought Vista was fine for everyday use like Web, email, word processor, but really
sucks for multimedia work. If I had just one Computer, I wouldn't consider it. I
think it will be a more secure Web surfer though.

Hi Steve, thanks for information on Vista. If i buy it I will have only the one
computer which I like to use for PhotoShop and Microsoft Word and publisher. Will
it be ok for Photoshop do you think.
Or what do you mean by multimedia work? Sorry I'm so ignorant. Again thanks a
lot and God bless you

Hi Dan Sarandrea, again thanks I like your sense of humour, it made me smile!
Yes I will try Googling it, it is amazing how many times I forget the simplest option
but I'll enjoy trying it now. Again thanks a lot and God Bless you

What I meant for multimedia, is working with Video, and Audio. For example taking
a music CD, or DVD and converting to other formats. Working with
Photoshop should be fine. I have Photoshop, but didn't try installing it on Vista,
I'm sure Adobe will get it patched, and working if it has some problems. I couldn't
get any Four of my regularly used Video Editing software, or my favorite CD ripper
to run on Vista. Burning DVD's, and CD's caused more crashes then I ever even got
on my old Windows ME PC. I didn't see any real
Killer application, or gotta have feature on Vista that would cause me to upgrade
a XP Computer to Vista.
