I cant get my laptop with vista to access my other pc with xp for file sharing, internet is working ok with router but not able to see my other computer. Ive read everything on vista to make it work but no luck. Xp was easy to do i have 4 I wired doing great. I also tried straight plug but nothing made sure workgroup name was same made sure to turn on net discovery turned off firewall no luck really dont know what else to do.

Finally got mine to work. BTW, I found that opening a command window (on the vista laptop) and pinging an XP workstation on my network a useful troubleshooting tool. (Ping wouldn't find the XP until I fixed problem). This was a new laptop that came with Norton internet preloaded (30 day trial). I removed norton. Networking began working -- ping successful, XP drives show up on vista There is probably some setting in norton that was getting in the way. I'll use msoft security junk until vista matures a bit. I did some other things prior to removing norton which may have been req'd: * made workgroup name identical with XP * downloaded and installed "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder" on XP (downloadable from microsoft)

The personal firewall part of NIS was doing its job.
