hi dan. the link is very usefull, but what if you have basic or premium- as i understand
they don't have networking center. do you not have a choice about network location?
is it automatically set to private?
it would be good if ms would point out differences between versions.

i've got ultimate edition so i can't say for certain due to lack of experience with
other versions, but am looking to get vista for two other machines and want to get
the cheapest option for networking. if you look here: http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/content.aspx?ctId=390&tabid=1#grid_install2
at the comparison grid
it says that only business and ultimate have networking center

I think that chart is mistaken regarding Network Center but accurate regarding Remote
Desktop.
Remote Desktop (hosting) is definitely not part of HB or HP, and it was not part
of XP Home or Media Center, just Pro and Tablet.
All of the descriptions of the functions of Networking and Sharing Center say it
is in HB, HP, Biz and Ult.
Easy to check at the store on a HB or HP display model.

The top of the page says it's applicable to all editions, and further down the step-by-step
calls out using the Networking and Sharing Center.
But a reality check couldn't hurt....next time I'm at the store I will check a HB
or HP display model.

Alex, I installed Home Basic on a computer I just built for my mother, and it indeed
has the options of private/public network available. Trying to get it to talk to
her old win98 computer to move some files over, and the verbage on the computer when
selecting private/public networks seemed kind of... weird, making me think I needed
to set it public, when in fact, it needs to be private, based on the link above.
