I got new pc presinstalled with vista and alot of my harware doesnt work. So i want to put xp on it. so is microsoft virtual pc like running xp from WITHIN vista? and if so, does this mean that ALL my hardware will work when i go to virtual xp? Finally i noticed that the demo on ms site says "any licensed version of windows will work on virtual pc". but in order to get xp on my new dell i have to use the xp reinstallation disc from my old system. --is that illegal, and will it work? thanks for any help!

You got a new pc with vista preisntalled and alot of the hardware doesn't work? Man did you shop at the wrong store. Virtual PC 2007 is a piece of software which you can install within your current operating system and then install other operating systems as a virtual pc. You will need a fair bit of ram available if you want to run vista and XP as a virtual pc. As for hardware, virtual pc uses virtual hardware, so things such as your printer, DVD drive, keyboard and mouse will work, it really depends on which hardware isn't working. Which pieces of hardware aren't working? Have you looked for driver updates, given it's a new pc with vista preinstalled I would contact your supplier and ask why the hardware isn't working.

I agree. If you bought a brand new machine with Vista pre-loaded and something (anything) doesn't work, I'd take that sucker back for a refund/exchange. It's not your job to fix something that was broke when you bought it (assuming this is the case).

I'm getting the impression that the PC itself is working fine but that many of his
peripherals haven't caught up to Vista yet.

some suppliers have been very slow with drivers/compatible programs for Vista. I'm
not sure how much of the 'not working' hardware will run in a virtual XP install
- but probably all of it (though dual boot to be sure). If your XP is still running
on 'old' Dell machine, you won't be able to activate it in virtual machine - though
not sure what you mean by 'reinstallation disk'. If that's a recovery disk (NOT an
XP install disk), it won't work - its designed for the dell machine only. If its
an install disk with key, then my previous comment applies.
