Problems Printing w/ Network Computers

My Desktop is running Windows Vista. I've setup to share my hp 9800 printer on the
network. My laptop is running windows xp. I can see the printer but it won't let
me setup the printer because it can't find the right driver. How do I make this
work? I've tried putting the printer cd in my laptop to install the driver from there,
but it won't work.

if it is a usb-connected printer on a remote machine, you need to define a local
port in vista in the format "\\machine\name of printer share" then connect to the
printer upon which it should prompt you for a driver

I can see the printer on my laptop and it does promp for the driver, but which driver
does it need? Vista doesn't have the windows xp driver loaded. That's not an option
to add. I downloaded the driver from hp.com but I can't find the .inf file that
it's looking for. Can you explain the defining local port better for me? Thanks

Start both computers, make sure the network is functional. Print a test page from
the Vista computer to make sure that's working. Share the printer out from the Vista
computer.
Open up the printers and faxes folder on the lappy and delete any previously installed
instances of the printer in question. Restart. Go back to the Printers and Faxes
folder, and without highlighting any other printers, click on File>Server Properties>Drivers
tab, and delete any instances of the HP driver in question. Restart.
Put the HP printer CD into the laptop and run it.
The newer HP setup utilities ask you right at the beginning if the printer you are
installing is directly connected to the computer or connected to another computer
on the network. Choose other computer on the network and it should just be a matter
of following the prompts.

It still won't find the correct driver from the hp cd. I have a deskjet 9800. I've
tried downloading the driver from hp, and using the cd. Nothing works.

I select the printer and I get the message that I'm installing a printer that a driver
may be installed, then I get a message asking to browse to the correct driver.

There are several common errors that involve the setup utility not being able to
find the right files, see this link:
