I was talking to a co-worker last night about the icons running on the toolbar at
the bottom right hand corner.
I wanted to know if i needed any of following icons, and if i don't how to get them
not boot up or run when i start the computer.
1. ATI icon, when i click on it, it just wants to know how i want another screen
to look, i dont have more than one, so i don't need that
2. Dell support. I dont really need it down there, there's that option in the programs.
3. AGEIA PhysX Processor settings, i don't know what that is.
4. Safely remove hardware. I dont feel the need to have it down there, when i can
do that from the control panel
5.McAfee.. i think that needs to stay
6. volume control, should stay
7. Yahoo messenger, i don't think i need to start up either.
8. Network Icon, i think that needs to stay.
Let me know if I really need any of the others, and if i don't, how to disable them
from when i start the computer.

If you simply want to hide the icons, then you right-click on the taskbar, select
the Notifications Area tab, then check the Hide Inactive Icons box, hit the Customize
button and decided which you want to hide. If you want to disable the programs from
starting up when you boot, then you can go to Run (Windows key+r), type in "msconfig"
without the quotes, Enter, then click on the Startup tab and uncheck what you don't
want running on startup. Just be sure of what you are turning off. You can also
do this in Windows Defender, under Tools, Software Explorer, and Startup Programs.
You can block them there from starting.

High Selena,
You might also try right clicking the icons or opening the programs and check for
a option for displaying a tray icon and disable it. I know ATI has that option when
you open the program.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Actually, you can hide the icon in the Notification Area by customizing the Hide
inactive icons option.

Hide inactive icons option.
is not an option if you want to stop the programs from running.. A PC magazine program
called startupcop that works with XP and prsumably Vista as well has better options
for completely removing processes the user had no intention of running. Otherwise
MSCONFIG typed into RUN allows you to unload these unruly programs from soaking up
that VALUABLE Ram in VISTA

The OP mentioned icons and programs not booting up. My first post was suggesting
Hide inactive icons if you simply want to turn off the icons. I also gave
a couple of suggestions for disabling the programs from starting at boot.
