LAN losing connectivity

I am often transferring files between 2 PCs, both Vista-to/from-Vista and Vista-to/from-XP. I both cases, I often get a 'specified network name no longer available' while I am transferring. It happens transferring in both directions and with both OS's. I have verified that both PC's are still connected and web connections are not affected, only PC-to-PC on the LAN. The PC in question (not always the same one) completely disappears from the network screens also (network neighborhood, et al). It usually requires rebooting one or both PC's to make them reconnect.

Here's where I would start (although it may be insufficient).

Open the properties for the NIC on each Vista machine make sure the following are turned off.
-QoS Packet Scheduler
-IPv6
-Link-Layer Discovery Mapper
-Link-Layer Discovery Responder

In other words, all the stuff you don't need, unless, of course, you are using IPv6 on your local network.
