vista audio settings

Windows Vista home premium.when my mic is plugged into front of tower i have sound in chat rooms.when unplugged i get a message upon entering the room that my computer does not have audio input capabilities or not configured.can anyone help with this? thanks

as long as i have mic plugged in front port i have sound in chat rooms,unplug it and i get message when entering chat that computer does not have audio input...needs to get settings right...help
