Video Memory

Does anyone know if there is a way to stop Vista from sharing my RAM with the video
card. My video card has 640mb of video memory and I don't think I need more than
that.

Not sure what you mean what makes you think it is sharing?

I would agree with jbmcmillan's insinuated point with his question; I don't think
your PC is sharing your system memory when we're talking over 600MB. But, if you
do not have a dedicated video card and are, instead, using an integrated GPU that
shares part of your system memory, the only way to change the amount of memory would
be through the bios, I believe. From everything I've read on this topic, the shared
memory setting cannot be changed (although, I'd like to do this on my machine so,
if anyone knows of a method to do so, please post it here). Additionally, it seems
that adding more memory to your PC doesn't change your video memory, it only adds
to the memory available to the system for other applications...... though that's
certainly not bad either. In general, though, most systems I've seen with integrated
GPU's that share system memory are using around 224-256 MB.

Sorry, my video card has 320mb, not 640mb. I forgot I bought the cheaper one....lol.
It is not integrated tho and when I check the display properties it say that it has
256 physical memory (nvidia driver glitch apparently) but it also says that I have
a total of 768mb of memory available which leads me to believe that it is sharing
system memory. Which I imagine is why when I look in the task manger that it says
it's using over 700mb of ram the processes add up to only about 200 and something.
WEIRD!!!

Actually, two things: First, I shouldn't automatically generalize about everyone's
PC's. There are a few later models that will allow BIOS settings to be changed for
aperture, etc., for graphics memory. If you check your BIOS at startup, you should
be able to tell if yours will allow you to make changes. Second, make sure what
GPU's are installed in Device Manager and disable any that are not applicable. Also,
you can view details about the installed graphics adapter, which will tell you how
much memory it has and how much is shared. Do this by clicking Start, Control Panel,
under Appearance and Personalization click Adjust screen resolution, click the Advanced
Settings button near the bottom, select the Adapter tab (if necessary). Near the
middle of the displayed tab you'll see Total Available Graphics Memory, Dedicated,
System Video Mem, and Shared. You might already know how to do this, but just in
case... :) Last, make sure you have the latest drivers for this card by checking
the nVidia site. Hope there's something here that helps sort this out.

Vista caches some things in ram so your process' and ram used will not add up so
nothing wierd about that.It releases it immediately if it needs it so no worry there.I'm
assuming you have a 8800GTS 320 and would not "share memory "and aperture size is
not in the bios anymore since pcie has been used.Do you have a motherboard that also
has onboard video?

No on-board video. I have an ASUS M2NE-SLI board. And yes, I have a 8800gts 320.
but in the video properties (advanced tab) it says 256mb ram in physical memory and
768mb total available memory. Where is it getting this extra 512mb from?

Windows has always reserved system memory for video no matter what kind of video
your PC has.
Vista is the only version of Windows that allows the user to see it.
Vista will use the reserved video memory if you start running out of system memory.
The problem with the 8800 is common right now. Nvidia should fix it soon.
