Question about 'Sort by Extension in Explorer'

I have a question about Sort by Extension in Explorer:

It is simple in VISTA. Right-click and empty area in Explorer (NOT a file). Select "Sort By" and at the bottom of the list select "More...". You will be given a choice to sort in more ways than you can imagine (including "Type" which is the way to sort by file extension). After seleting it use the "Move Up" and "Move Down" buttons to move it up near the top with other selected items.

As Diamond Geo stated, you can sort by the file extension by using the "Type" column.
See the "How to Change the Column Sort Order" in this tutorial for more on how to
do this.

There are no dumb questions, just the people that do not ask them.

So what's your question then?
I'm assuming that you're just letting us know how to do this in Vista....

I know this is an old thread but the problem with sort by type is it will not sort by extension but by the program associated with that extension. As a result I have extensions like .gpx and .loc that are associated with the geocaching program GSAK. Sort by type will group them using the with GSAK not gpx or loc. Any suggestions Thanks Steve

As Steve points out, those responding with solutions are not reading the question.
Searching by 'type' is not the same as searching by 'extension'. In many cases 'type'
is like 'extension' but not all. In some cases the registered 'type' is not correct
for the application that you intend to use the file with.

One example is when one program registers an extension, say ".foo" as type "Bar data
file.". If you are working with another program that uses ".foo" files and try to
search the directory examine the created ".foo" files if you list by 'type' you will
have to know that they are listed as "Bar data file". If there is a large collection
of files and types in the folder knowing that the "Bar data files" is really a ".foo"
can be a head ache. This is even worse if you are working with someone else's program
and there are a large number of extensions with registered types.

Such is my scenario. In this situation I would like to list the files by 'extension'
and not the 'type'.

One solution exists, but it does not work with Vista, only win XP and 2000. Cpext
by John Williams. http://www.xrayz.co.uk/extension-column/

I hope that although this thread has gone unanswered since December, 2007 I hope
that someone might know a good solution.

-Andrew
