Driver for digital camera

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 running Home Premium and, for the first time today, I
plugged in the USB cable from my Sony DSC-P30 digital camera, intending to download
some photos to my hard drive. I was really surprised to find that Vista does not
recognize the cable, claiming that it has no driver for it. I have tried everything
I could within Vista and no luck. I tried Sony and found no Vista driver for this
camera. Does anyone have any idea where I can find a solution for this? I tried drivers.com,
and no luck there either.
Thank you,
Tom

Your right. Sony says Vista will see all it's cameras and install native drivers
for it.

Plug the camera in and go to windows update. You might get lucky and the drivers
will be there.
Good luck!

Go to "Start", "Control Panel", "System and Maintenance", "Administrative Tools",
and open "Services".
Scroll down to "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)", double click on it, set it to "Automatic",
and start it.
If it's already started then you will probably have to go to the Device Manager and
manually install the drivers for the camera.
Good luck!

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond and for your excellent suggestion.
I got excited when I went to Services and saw WIA set to Automatic but NOT started.
So I started it and then plugged in my camera, but I got the usual Found New Hardware
message followed by a searh of Windows Update, and then a request for me to insert
my Sony CD. MS Update did not have the driver. On the Sony site I found drivers for
this camera for all operating systems except Vista, along with a note from Sony saying
that Vista can take care of this and no Sony driver is needed. Obviously each is
making assumptions about the other and no one has done the cross-checking. Maybe
I am the first?
In any case, I am out of luck still, but sincerely appreciate your reply.
Thank you,
Tom

Lets try this:
Plug your camera in and turn it on. Let Vista do it's thing then exit out of everything
when it's done.
Now go to "Start", right click "Computer", select "Properties", and click on the
"Device Manager". There should be a question mark next to your camera. Right click,
select "Update Driver Software", and then select "Browse My Computer for Driver Software".
In the next window select "Let me pick from a List of Device Drivers on My Computer",
uncheck "Show Compatible Hardware", then under the "Manufacturer" column scroll down
to Sony and click once to highlight. Now under the "Model" column look for you camera,
click once to highlight, and click next.
If it gives a big fat warning about the wrong drivers, install them anyway.
Then I would go to Windows Update to see if they offer drivers.
Good luck!

This worked!!!! I can't believe it. I dutifully followed the steps you outlined figuring
I'd run into a dead end, but I did find Sony on the list and I did find "DSC". I
installed it in spite of the warnings you mentioned, and I can now access my camera!
Thank you so very, very much! I had lost faith in Vista and Microsoft. Of course,
they could have made it a little easier - as could Sony I should add.
Thanks again, and Happy New Year!
