problems accessing microsoft.com, among other things

This is my first posting here - I tried searching for answers already posted, but
couldn't find what I needed. Let me apologize in advance if this is duplicating someone
else's questions!
Anyway, around Nov 1 we bought a new HP desktop with Vista. On 12/26 we finally got
Qwest DSL and could start connecting to the internet. Since then, I've had the following
problems:
1. Windows defender and microsoft update are unable to download any updates (I get
error 0x80072ee2 )
2. I can't access any microsoft.com websites ("Page is unable to load" type error)
for help, using either IE7 or Firefox.
3. Norton Internet Security: LiveUpdate was unable to correctly update (error LU1812).
I attempted to completed uninstall ALL Symantec folders/programs from the computer,
in the hopes that these problems were caused by competition b/w NAV and Defender.
4. I can't access avast.com to download that antivirus instead. (to be noted, most
other websites seem to work though - e.g., google.com, wellsfargo.com, cabelas.com,
amazon.com, etc.)
5. I installed Quicken on the new computer, and Quicken is unable to update with
quicken.com. Also, when I try to download financial data from my bank, the data is
unable to make it into quicken for some reason.
I've tried lowering my security settings in IE and Firefox, adding microsoft.com
(etc) to the "safe" websites list, turning OFF the windows defender firewall for
about 5 minutes, etc. I'm at my wits end!
Again, I apologize if this is a silly question, or if it's already been answered
but I can't find the answer on this site, but any help you can give me would be greatly
appreciated!!

Problem one:
http://www.updatexp.com/0x80072ee2.html
Problem two:
http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t25824-cant-access-microsoft-websites.html
After fixing problem two the rest of your download problems should be fixed.
You might want to talk to Qwest also. It sounds like your modem is not setup correctly.
Good luck!

Thanks so much for your help! However...
Regarding the fix-it suggestions from the first link, I have made as many of the
changes as I can:
1. check the internet connection: Qwest swears their modem is operating properly
and our internet connection is fine
2. reconfigure the firewall to allow windows update: Kaspersky (our new internet
security program) has windows updater allowed
3. remove Windows Update entries from the HOSTS file: done
4. Run the IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS command: "error: the requested operation requires elevation"
5. Add Windows Update addresses to the trusted sites list: done
6. Add Windows Update addresses to the proxy settings exceptions list: i don't know
what this means exactly, but I think we have a direct connection to the internet?
7. Change the MTU setting on your router: Unable to do this because all the fix-it
links are for XP and not Vista
Regarding the suggested fixes from the second link:
1. Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 or 2 on the ICS host computer.
2. Find the right MTU setting on the client computer, as shown here: again, unable
to do this because the site warns against using the program with Vista
3. Download the free RASPPPoE program and install it on the host computer: this website
has a warning not to use the program with Vista
So, I'm still at square one. Windows update still won't update itself, I still can't
get help from microsoft.com, and I can't download financial data into quicken.
Is it time for me to throw in the towel and call the Geek Squad??? My only other
option (although I'm still hoping for help from you all!) might be to call HP and/or
Microsoft help desks tomorrow... (groan!)

Hi Stephny! This is Syed ( the guy who bothered ya at thanksgiving!). I read abt
yer problem and also skimmed through some of the suggested solutions. You have pretty
much approached the problem in all possible ways. Haplessly, nothing has worked so
far.
I guess, before you call geek squad, you should try one last thing. Try running HP
recovery. The moment you start up your computer, you will see a small message at
the bottom of yer screen saying " press F7 or F1 (or one of the function keys) to
run recovery". This option basically reinstalls all the drivers, softwares and other
programs that came with yer computer-its gonna eradicate viruses or any other corrupt
files that might be causing problems you have listed. Remember, running recovery
erases all your saved data-so if you have any important files on yer computer, copy
them onto a cd or a flash drive before running recovery.
I hope that this solves yer problem.

I read your post with interest as I am currently experiencing much the same problems
you did. I have tried all recommended options and even resorted to re-installaing
the operating system. This did not make any difference and I keep getting that annoying
error report!!
I would be very grateful if you could let me know by way of this forum how you resolved
the issue with the MTU settings.
Thank You

As my dad (Steve) mentioned, it turned out that once I changed the MTU settings on
my Vista machine, I was able to access all websites - yay!
These are the steps I followed (since DrTCP, which works with XP, doesn't work in
Vista):
To set the MTU settings on a Windows Vista Machine
1. Click on Vista icon (start), All programs, Accessories, then right click on Command
prompt and select "Run as administrator"
In the Command prompt window, type in the following.
1. netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces
(this will display a list of interfaces on the system and their current MTU settings)
2. netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=XXXX store=persistent
(replace "Local Area Connection" with the interface name of the connection you
want to change the MTU to. This is normally "Local Area Connection," but double-check
that it's the same on your computer. Where the X's are, insert the desired MTU setting.
1500 is the default. Websites I read recommended trying the following values in decreasing
order, restarting the machine each time, until the problem goes away and you can
connect to all websites: 1500, 1492, 1472, 1468, 1460, 1435, 1430, 1400)
3. Restart the Vista machine.
Hopefully that works! (It worked for me when I set it to 1435) If it doesn't, and
you want to reset the default "autotuning" that Vista comes with, here is the syntax
to reset the changes you made:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal
Hope that helps :)

sorry, I forgot to also mention this step!
first run this syntax in the command prompt, in order to turn off Vista's MTU autotuning:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
